Important information for those leaving Nelson County Schools.

Before leaving the district, please log into your talented account to confirm your mailing information is correct. If your address changes after you leave the district, remember to contact the Central Office Human Resources Department to notify them of the change.

Retiring

WHO DO I CONTACT IF I AM PLANNING ON RETIRING FROM THE SCHOOL SYSTEM?

The Kentucky Public Pensions Authority (KPPA) is a defined benefit plan, providing a guaranteed payout at retirement. There are also disability and death benefits available to KPPA members and their beneficiaries. Visit the Kentucky Public Pensions Authority for more information.

COBRA

Eligible employees can continue health insurance for up to 18 months after leaving a Kentucky school district through COBRA. 

There must be a loss of group health insurance coverage to be able to elect cobra continuation.

You have 60 days from the notifications date from Wageworks to decide whether you want to elect COBRA continuation coverage under the plan.

Life Insurance Portability

Your basic, optional, and dependent group life insurance coverage will end the last day of the same month in which your employment ends.

However, in the 31 days following the termination of your coverage, you may convert your basic, optional, and dependent group life insurance coverage to an individual policy without having to furnish evidence of insurability.

Unemployment Compensation

The Nelson County Board of Education is responsible for administering the unemployment insurance program, including processing and reviewing unemployment claims. This office does not make the decision as to whether or not an individual receives unemployment benefits. Eligibility for unemployment insurance is determined solely by the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training, Division of Unemployment Insurance.

All claimants who file for unemployment benefits must provide the address of Nelson County Schools as the address of their last employer. That address is:

Sick & Personal Days

  • If transferring to another district, sick days will transfer.
  • If the employee’s contract is fulfilled, personal days will roll over to sick days.
  • If an employee is leaving the district but not transferring to another, sick days will not be paid.
  • If an employee is retiring with the State of Kentucky, the state retirement office will reach out to the NCS for the number of sick days  to determine the number of sick days to transfer.

Benefits

If employee fulfills contract
All benefits term on the date specified below: coverage ends based on number of contracted days:

  • Less than 230 days ends on August 31
  • More than 230 days ends on July 31
     

If employee terms without fulfilling contract

  • Vision, dental and all voluntary benefits term at the end of the month in which the employee ends employment. Cost for these benefits will continue to be deducted from an employee’s pay through their last check.
  • Health: Ends on the 15th if employee leaves 1st-15th, ends at end of month if employee leaves 16th through end of month.
     

If employee transfers to another district
Newly hired employees who are transferring from another KEHP participating company without a break in employment newly hired transferring employees will have a “clean” transfer based on the number of working days between employment. The effective date of KEHP elections is the first day of the semi-monthly billing period of the hire date with the new company. This will require the new company to begin providing the employer contribution for the semi-monthly billing period in which the employee was hired.

Example: Employment begins on August 1 and the employee’s last working day with the previous employer was July 31; the new company must provide coverage and the employer contribution for the month of August.
 

Last Pay Date

  • If an employee is non-renewed they will continue to be paid through the summer, with their termination date being the end of their contract.
  • If an employee leaves before completing their contract, then they will be paid on the pay date following the end of that pay period.

Return of Property

It is important that you return all school property to your principal. Please provide your principal or school business leader with any school property. Any tools, laptops, computers, keys, and key fobs must be returned to your school office. Failure to return school property can result in a fee and/or charge for the cost of the property.
