Care Clinic Services

Welcome to the NCS Care Clinic

Professional Healthcare. Right at School. Always Free.

The Nelson County Schools Care Clinic provides district-owned, high-tech healthcare for preventative wellness, minor illnesses, and injuries. Our goal is to keep students healthy and in the classroom while saving parents time and travel.

Why Choose the Care Clinic?

  • 100% Free for Everyone: All visits, diagnostic testing, and medications provided at the clinic are free of charge. No co-pays, no bills, and no insurance are ever required.
  • High-Quality, High-Tech Care: Every clinic has access to a Registered Nurse (RN) and a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) during the school day. We use advanced technology, like electronic otoscopes, which allow our practitioners to perform thorough ear and throat exams virtually.
  • Comprehensive Services: We offer on-site rapid diagnostic testing (Strep, Flu, COVID-19, and Urinalysis) as well as initial school-entry, 6th-grade entry, and sports physicals.
  • School Excuses Made Simple: The Care Clinic provides official school excuses if we evaluate your child and send them home, or if a parent/guardian phone consultation with our nurse results in a recommendation to stay home.
  • Streamlined Recovery: If a prescription is needed, our FNPs send it electronically to your pharmacy of choice so it’s ready when you leave work. We handle the details so your child can get better faster.

Understanding Consent & Safety

We prioritize parent communication and student safety above all else.

  • Online Registration (OLR): Parents must complete the initial consent for RN and NP services during the annual registration process to access the full range of clinic services.
  • Chronic Disease & Daily Care: We support students with chronic medical diagnoses. If your child requires daily medications or treatments during the school day, our staff will coordinate their care strictly according to their healthcare provider's orders.
  • Verbal Permission (The "Double Check"): Our staff will always obtain direct verbal permission from a parent or guardian before:
    • Administering over-the-counter medication (Grades PK-5th, or any student unable to clearly communicate their medication history).
    • Performing any diagnostic testing.
    • Conducting a Nurse Practitioner visit.
  • Job Shadowers / Clinical Apprentices (Grades PK-8th Only): With your consent during OLR, high school students in our Health Science Pathway may be present during your child’s Care Clinic visit to observe or perform basic hands-on tasks under strict, 1:1 supervision. These students are participating for educational purposes and are bound by the same HIPAA and FERPA privacy protocols as our staff.
  • Vaccine Policy: Care Clinic staff DO NOT offer or administer vaccines to students.
  • Emergency Care: Per KRS 156.502, emergency first aid is always provided to all students regardless of clinic consent status.

Parental Partnership & Support

  • Participation: For virtual visits, parents or guardians are welcome to join the call upon request.
  • Consultations: Our Care Clinic staff are always available for phone consultations with parents to discuss health concerns, symptoms, or care plans.
