Nelson County's Preschool Education Program is available for all four-year-old children who are eligible for free lunch, and all three- and four-year-old children with developmental delays and disabilities, regardless of income. All free-lunch eligible four-year-olds must be four by October 1 of the school year in which they will be attending. If you feel that your preschool student will qualify for this program, please contact the elementary school in your attendance area.
Registration for Nelson County's Preschool Program usually takes place in March for the following school year. Please watch for announcements for the exact date and register your child at the appropriate school. Each school is limited in the number of students that can be served, and students will be accepted at a site on a first-come basis. Once a site is full, students registering late may be transported to another school in the Nelson County District.
Nelson County's Preschool Program operates ½ days Monday through Thursday. It is designed to be developmentally appropriate for young children. "Developmentally appropriate" is defined by law to mean that the program focuses on the child's physical, intellectual, social, and emotional development, including interpersonal, intrapersonal and socialization skills.
Foster Heights Elementary and New Haven School will provide tuition-based Preschool Programs during the 2009-2010 school year for those students who do not qualify based on disability or free lunch. The other elementary schools will accept tuition students if space permits.
