Academic Team

 

AFJROTC

NCHS Air Force JROTC

Students enrolled in the AFJROTC curriculum are eligible for membership in the following clubs.

AFJROTC Awareness Presentation Team

Students must be enrolled in an AFJROTC class.  This team brings awareness to a variety of issues of concern to middle school and high school students to include substance abuse, bullying, and teen suicide.  This group develops awareness and prevention programs on these issues.

AFJROTC Model/Rocket Club

Students must be enrolled in AFJROTC class. This group builds aircraft models and rockets to launch.

AFJROTC Kitty Hawk Air Society

AFJROTC equivalent to the National Honors Society–charter includes academic, service and leadership requirements for members.  Members provide Big Brother – Big Sister Mentoring/Tutoring for fellow cadets.  Members must also plan and organize an Individual Service Project.

Cardinal Theatre Association (Drama) 

The Cardinal Theatre Association is an after school performing arts program for the students of Nelson County High School.  CTA produces 2 mainstage show each year:

1. Cardinal Follies, a musical reveiw that includes production numbers, skits and small ensembles.  This show goes up the last weekend prior to Thanksgiving.

2. Spring Musical,  a full Broadway Musical complete with sets, costumes, and choreography.  The 2018 Spring Musical will be Thoroughly Modern Millie, and will be performed the last full weekend in April. 

 

Environmental Club 

Club Mission: Promote environmental issues and awareness

This club seeks members who want to protect our planet by increasing awareness of environmental issues facing the world today. We hope to implement a recycling program within our school.  We want to participate in Earth Day in April. There are many ways we can protect our resources and conserve energy. We hope to find students who want to explore how to do that together. 

Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA)

FCCLA is a national organization that has a mission to promote personal growth and leadership development through Family and Consumer Sciences.  Family Career and Community Leaders of America provides students the ultimate leadership experience through all walks of their life.

Future Problem Solving (FPS) is an internationally recognized, award winning program that encourages critical thinking. FPS fosters investigation, ingenuity, creativity and cooperative learning. KAAC is the sole organization licensed to coordinate FPS in Kentucky.

Madrigal Singers

Directed by Stephanie Robinson with opportunities for student lead instruction ajd rehearsal,  this group welcomes students interested in classical singing and a Capella choral literature. Singers don't have to be experienced performers but should have a professional attitude in practice and preparing music, working with others, and learning proper vocal and performance techniques.

Squad 139

Nelson County High School Squad 139 Club will provide interested students with the background knowledge to pursue careers in the public safety field.  Interested students will learn about all aspects of public safety such as emergency medical services, fire fighting, corrections, communications, military branches and police work.  Students will get firsthand knowledge from professionals within the public safety field on experiences from their careers.  Students will see the dedication to a greater cause shown by these professionals.  Students will gain pride and respect for the community that they live in.

 

STLP

The Student Technology LeadershipProgram (STLP™) uses project-based learning principals to empower student learning and achievement through the utilization (and creation) of technology based solutions to school and community needs.

An appointed school coordinator (Mrs. Jessica Sparrow) guides students to create products, provide services or carry out projects that help the school and community.

STLP is open to all students in P-16. No student should be turned away from being part of STLP. Restricting membership is not part of an active recruitment and retention process.

STLP allows students the opportunity to demonstrate what they know in various ways called categories. STLP taps into the students’ interest and can challenge and motivate them.

STLP provides a means for students to design, create, collaborate and learn.

VEX Robotics

In the VEX Competitions, presented by the Robotics Education & Competition Foundation, teams of students are tasked with designing and building a robot to play against other teams from around the world in a game-based engineering challenge.  One of the primary missions of VEX is to help students acquire real world life skills that will benefit them in their academic and professional future. Members practice a variety of critical life skills including project management, time management, brainstorming, and teamwork. VEX will meet two days every week after school until 5:30.
