District schools closed for eclipse

By Tom Dekle, Communications Director

Nelson County Schools will be closed on Monday, Aug. 21, due to possible hazards posed by the solar eclipse predicted for that date.

“Our area will experience a solar eclipse. While this is a historic event, the eclipse also has the potential to be hazardous to eyes. To ensure the safety of all students and staff, the Nelson County Schools will be closed on Monday, Aug. 21,” district leadership announced to staff today.

Nelson County child care facilities are to be open and running on normal schedules on that day. All children are to remain indoors with blinds pulled for safety during the solar eclipse.  Parents are asked NOT to pick up their child between the hours of 1 and 4 p.m. for the safety of their children, school staff, and themselves.

All school-related activities such as sports events, club meetings, and other events involving Nelson County Schools students, faculty, and staff are to be postponed until after 6 p.m. on that date.  No one is to be on a Nelson County Schools campus until after 5 p.m. on Aug. 21.

A make-up day plan is to be presented to the board of education during the board’s regularly scheduled meeting on Aug. 15, with information to be distributed after board approval.
