Beliefs
WE BELIEVE all people are valuable.
WE BELIEVE high levels of expectation lead to greater achievements.
WE BELIEVE our society benefits when diversity and creative expression are encouraged and affirmed.
WE BELIEVE individuals have choices and are responsible for their actions.
WE BELIEVE healthy family units lead to a strong society.
WE BELIEVE people require guidance for positive character development.
WE BELIEVE good relationships require open communication.
WE BELIEVE all people have the right to feel safe.
WE BELIEVE hope is essential to a happy, healthy and productive society.
WE BELIEVE education and lifelong learning are essential to one's quality of life.
Mission
The Nelson County School District, in partnership with the community, will provide diverse and individualized instructional services to inspire, enable and prepare all students to be responsible, successful members of the competitive global society.
Objectives
One hundred percent of our students will demonstrate educational progress.
One hundred percent of our students will graduate or successfully complete their individual achievement program.
One hundred percent of our students will be prepared for a post-secondary educational program or a responsible endeavor of their choice following the successful completion of their educational program.
Parameters
All decisions will be made based on what is best for students.
Nothing will take precedence over the Pre K-12 instructional program.
We will not tolerate ineffectiveness and mediocrity.
We will celebrate successful teaching and learning accomplishments.
We will positively capitalize on change.
Strategies
- We will communicate with, energize and involve our community members into full support and implementation of the mission and objectives.
- We will evaluate and improve the test of basic skills for each grade level.
- We will nurture and maintain a lasting relationship with our graduates.
- We will continue to instill socially responsible behavior and promote family involvement and valuing of education.
- We will recruit, employ, retain and support qualified employees.
- We will develop, restructure and implement differentiated teaching/ learning services to address diverse student needs to facilitate continuous progress.
- We will continue to seek and secure funding and other resources through creative alternative sources.
- We will continue to utilize, maintain and upgrade technology.
Strategic Plan Summary
Strategy #1: We will communicate with, energize and involve our community members into full support and implementation of the mission and objectives.
- Produce a video file for the Nelson County School District.
- Update and electronically distribute to all schools the current directory of civic/service organizations that could be contacted for support.
- Update “brag/image” brochures for the district and individual schools to be distributed in the community.
- Utilize class fieldtrips within Nelson County.
- Encourage each school to obtain membership in community organizations.
- Attain and successfully update school Web sites.
- Implement a district segment on local television and radio.
Strategy #2: We will evaluate and improve the test of basic skills for each grade level.
- Evaluate the current test of basic skills.
- Improve the test of basic skills.
- Communicate the evaluation process and recommended revisions to the test of basic skills.
Strategy #3: We will nurture and maintain a lasting relationship with our graduates.
- Create a wall of fame to honor graduates and individual achievements.
- Develop a plan for seniors to enter their information, i.e., maiden name, e-mail, current address, graduation year, on the alumni Web page.
- Establish an annual alumni publication.
- Create a separate alumni director/coordinator position.
Strategy #4: We will continue to instill socially responsible behavior and promote family involvement and valuing of education.
- Continue engaging each student to participate in at least one school-sponsored stewardship activity (co-curricular, extra-curricular, school-based learning, work-based learning, student enrichment activity, etc.) each year.
- Designate evidence-based systems of behavioral/disciplinary support within each school that will improve each school’s climate and culture by proactively teaching and reinforcing respect and responsibility.
- Enhance positive, timely communication with parents.
- Enhance parent involvement at each school.
- Explore additional informative and nurturing programs for families with preschool children.
- Enhance orientation programs at each school for children and parents at the beginning of each year.
Strategy #5: We will recruit, employ, retain and support qualified employees.
- Enhance the recruitment, employment and retention of qualified applicants and employees of the Nelson County School District.
- Improve conditions for employees of the Nelson County School District.
- Maintain a competitive working environment for all substitutes in the Nelson County School District, both classified and certified.
Strategy #6: We will develop, restructure and implement differentiated teaching/learning services to address diverse student needs to facilitate continuous progress.
- Develop and implement differentiated teaching/learning services to accommodate our gifted students in the Nelson County School District.
- Further develop our English as a Second Language program to meet the needs of our diverse student population in Nelson County.
- Develop and implement professional development for staff in areas of differentiated instruction.
- Develop and implement differentiated teaching and learning to accommodate special education/504 plan students in the Nelson County School District.
- Develop and implement differentiated teaching and learning services to accommodate our students having behavioral difficulties impacting academic achievement in the regular education school environment.
Strategy #7: We will continue to seek and secure funding and other resources through creative alternative sources.
- Educate the public of the need to increase revenue.
- Develop a relationship with prospective employers of our graduates.
- Increase funding for programs through grant writing opportunities.
- Establish and/or strengthen relationships with post-secondary educational institutions to acquire resources to assist or further the education of students and staff.
- Recommend to the NCEEF board that they promote and educate the public about the existence and methodology of the fund.
- Increase the awareness of fundraising opportunities.
