Principal's Message

Welcome to Nelson County's Preschool; the Nelson County Early Learning Center. Here at the Nelson County ELC we are proud of our staff, students, and facility.

We accept students once they turn 3 and before they are kindergarten age. Each child is screened for potential delays before entering school and it may determine eligibility. We enroll students all year long and accept them under the following circumstances: potential delay, low-income of the family (160% of poverty), or tuition-based. It is our goal to never turn any child away from entering preschool; because we know the value in early education.

Our staff is comprised of state certified teachers, instructional assistants, child care workers, cafeteria staff, office staff, and a custodian. We serve a meal to each class and offer wrap around care for our students from 6am-6pm daily. If you are interested in having your child in the childcare call Ms. Brenda at 502-249-0145 and she will be happy to assist you.

Our classes are determined by age and address. Students who live in the outskirts of the county are in the morning classes while the inside of the county is in the afternoon. Then, their age on August 1, will determine which classroom. 3 and 4 year olds learn together and 4 and 5 year olds learn together. We have found this to be a successful transition for us and allows us to align our skills, standards, and expectations based on the age and maturity of the students.

Each day students spend 25 minutes at a meal together, 30 minutes at recess, which we call gross motor, 60 minutes in centers, 10 minutes in large group, and 15 minutes in small groups. Our classrooms have 9 centers: sand, water, math, science, writing, art, blocks, dramatic play, and library. The gross motor spaces consist of a new multipurpose room and an amazing playground with a turf and rubber footing!

Why preschool? Brain development has been studied and it has been discovered that little brains are craving information and the more we give it the better the person will be as an adult! Preschool provides structured time for students to explore their interests, learn to problem solve, develop social skills, begin emerging reading and math skills, reason, and make decisions based on evidence. We work while they are playing, assessing knowledge, asking high-level questions to spark thinking, and developing a zest for learning!

We welcome you to come take a tour, visit a classroom, pick up a registration packet, and ask us questions! We are all part of your child's village that will get them ready for kindergarten and beyond.
